“Borders of Reality” is a visual dance performance, inspired by the Western Gate of Serdica, not only as an architectural heritage from the ancient and early Byzantine city but also as part of the contemporary urban environment. The performance focuses on boundaries, not so much in their historical context of a protective function, but more as an opportunity for connection. Through the art of contemporary dance, visual transformations, and music, the audience will become part of a continuous movement from individual protected space to the collective environment, from past to future with new possibilities for connection through identity and belonging.
The work on the performance builds on the experience gained by Derida Dance Company within the large three-year European project Dancing Histories, related to bringing archaeological sites to life through contemporary dance. In 2024, the company developed and presented two new performances specifically adapted to the peculiarities of the Viminacium Archaeological Park in Serbia and the Tharros Archaeological Park in Sardinia, Italy.
The performance “Borders of Reality” will be adapted to become part of the regular monthly repertoire at Derida Stage. A VR recording of the performance will also be made, allowing us to reach elderly people, children, and youth in remote settlements and neighborhoods over the next few months with the help of VR glasses.
