As part of the Derida Dance Center Residency Programme, Spanish artist Antonio Javier Aguilera Rodríguez will present a section of the creative process developed during his stay in Sofia.

The event will take place on 7 August 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at Derida Stage and will offer audiences an encounter with an unfinished and open-ended project — a space for observation, exchange and dialogue between the artist and the audience.

The work, entitled “23f”, begins with the idea of the simulacrum — a space in which emptiness appears as a form of silence constructed through noises, movements and shapes. The project approaches the stage as a field of possibilities in which images can emerge, dissolve and be reformulated at the same time.

At the centre of the research is what the artist describes as “Schrödinger’s moment” — the moment in which forms exist in a state of superposition. They are simultaneously created and still undefined, present and disappearing. This condition opens up endless possibilities for deforming, transforming and reconsidering form until it begins to inhabit every possible place within the performance space.

For Antonio, freedom emerges through stillness and silence, while the field of possibilities remains open — before desire intervenes and turns one of those possibilities into a decision. Through movement, the artist explores how decisions generate sensations, affects and perceptions, and how these gradually develop into concepts and impulses through which we attempt to understand and resolve a given problem.

The project also directs attention towards emptiness as a trace left behind by intention. Each time a movement is performed, it no longer belongs entirely to the performer. It passes into the empty space, leaving behind only its resonance.

“To create means to believe in the story you tell yourself in order to discover your place in the world.”

Through his work, Antonio explores new ways of inhabiting the stage, combining the classical principle of the fourth wall with an inward gaze towards the deeper layers of human experience. Through intention, sensation and movement, he searches for an in-between space in which form and experience can exist simultaneously, contradict one another and continuously transform each other.

The presentation is not intended to introduce a finished performance. Instead, it invites the audience to witness the process at a moment when its directions remain open — before the final decision, before the form becomes fixed and before one possibility displaces all the others.
